Acalypha Hispida Care

Acalypha Hispida, also known as Cat's Tail or Chenille plant, is one of the most dramatic tropical houseplants. Its long, velvety, bright red inflorescences hang down like silken tassels and can brighten up any interior. It's a plant that won't make you wait – and you'll love it for that.

💧 Watering

Acalypha loves moisture but dislikes being waterlogged.

When to water: Water regularly as soon as the top layer of substrate (approx. 2–3 cm) dries out. In summer, watering may be needed up to twice a week.

Beware of overwatering: Standing water at the roots causes rot – always ensure drainage and remove excess water from the saucer.

Water: Use soft, standing water at room temperature. Hard water can cause the leaf tips to turn brown.

☀️ Light

Light is key to abundant flowering of Acalypha.

Placement: It needs bright, indirect light – ideally by an east or west-facing window.

Lack of light: In the shade, it will stop flowering and lose its vibrancy. Flowering is directly dependent on sufficient light.

Direct sun: Direct midday sun can scorch the leaves – in summer, provide shade or move it away from the window.

🌡️ Temperature and Air

Ideal temperature: 18–25 °C. Acalypha is sensitive to cold – it must not be exposed to temperatures below 15 °C or drafts.

Humidity: As a tropical plant, it loves high air humidity (60% and above). Regularly mist the leaves or place the pot on a tray with moist gravel.

Cleanliness: Occasionally wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth – this removes dust and promotes photosynthesis.

🌿 Fertilization and Growth

Fertilization: From March to September, fertilize every 2 weeks with a liquid fertilizer high in potassium (promotes flowering). In winter, omit fertilization entirely.

Growth: Acalypha grows quickly and can be quite bushy. Regular pruning will maintain a compact shape and encourage the formation of new shoots and flowers.

🧽 Substrate

The basis of success is a well-draining, airy substrate.

Composition: Quality houseplant substrate mixed with perlite in a 2:1 ratio to ensure good drainage.

Drainage: A layer of expanded clay (LECA) at the bottom of the pot with drainage holes is an absolute necessity – Acalypha cannot tolerate wet feet.
