Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' – Care for Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' is an iconic deciduous tree or shrub that brings a touch of oriental elegance to the garden. It is prized for its deeply lobed, five-lobed leaves with an intense burgundy red to purple hue, which turns vibrant crimson in autumn. It grows picturesquely, multi-stemmed, and rather slowly, making it a perfect focal point for Japanese gardens, rockeries, or even large containers on terraces.

💧 Watering For Japanese maples: Balance is key. They have a delicate and shallow root system that is sensitive to extremes.

When to water: The substrate should be constantly slightly moist, but never waterlogged. The root ball must not completely dry out, otherwise, the leaves will immediately start to dry out from the tips.

Summer care: On hot summer days, it requires regular watering (daily for potted plants). Mulching with bark is ideal to retain moisture around the roots.

Water: Soft rainwater is best for it. Excessively hard water can cause yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) over time.

☀️ Light 'Atropurpureum' needs light for its colors, but does not tolerate extreme heat.

Placement: An ideal location is with bright diffused light or partial shade.

Sun vs. Color: For intense red color, it needs several hours of sun (preferably morning sun). In deep shade, the leaves turn green.

Beware of sunburn: Strong afternoon summer sun combined with dry air can "scorch" the leaves. A location protected from drying winds is suitable.

🌡️ Temperature and air

Ideal environment: It loves higher air humidity. It thrives near garden ponds.

Frost resistance: It is fully frost-resistant (down to approximately -20 °C), but young plants in containers should be protected in winter (wrap the pot with burlap). Late spring frosts are dangerous for it, as they can damage freshly sprouted leaves.

Air: It requires a location protected from drafts and strong winds, which mechanically damage its delicate leaves.

🌿 Fertilization and pruning

Fertilization: From spring to mid-summer, use fertilizers for acid-loving plants or slow-release fertilizers. Do not fertilize after August, so that the wood has time to mature before winter.

Pruning: The natural shape of the maple is its greatest asset, so pruning is not necessary. If you want to shape the plant, prune during dormancy (November–January) to prevent the tree from "crying" (losing sap).

🧽 Substrate and planting The basics are acidic pH and permeability.

Composition: It requires humus-rich, well-draining, and acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). An ideal mixture is garden soil, peat, and a little sand.

Drainage: When planting in containers, a thick layer of expanded clay or gravel at the bottom is essential to prevent the roots from standing in water, which leads to root rot.
