Aphelandra squarrosa Dania Care Guide
Aphelandra squarrosa Dania, also known as the zebra plant, is a charming houseplant with distinctive dark green leaves featuring ivory veins and beautiful yellow flower spikes. It brings a tropical touch to any interior and will become a focal point in any space.
Watering
Water regularly but moderately – keep the substrate evenly moist, never waterlogged. Water as soon as the top layer of the substrate begins to dry out. Aphelandra is sensitive to both drying out and overwatering.
Use room temperature, settled water. Tap water with a high calcium content can cause spots on the leaves.
Light
It thrives best in bright, indirect light. Direct midday sun can scorch the leaves, while too dark a spot will cause the leaf patterns to fade and prevent flowering.
An ideal location is near an east or west-facing window.
Temperature and Humidity
Ideal temperature: 18–24 °C. The plant does not tolerate drafts or temperatures below 15 °C.
Air humidity: Aphelandra loves high humidity – ideally 60% or more. Regularly mist the leaves or place the plant on a tray with moist pebbles.
Fertilizing
During the growing season (spring–summer), fertilize every 14 days with a liquid fertilizer for flowering houseplants.
Reduce or stop fertilizing entirely in winter.
Substrate
Use an airy, well-draining substrate – ideally a mix of houseplant potting soil with added perlite. The plant does not tolerate heavy, clayey soil.
