Caring for Begonia leaf Ferox
Begonia Ferox is one of the most distinctive collector's begonias. Its dark leaves covered with sharp spines look almost prehistoric – it's a true unique plant that will captivate every visitor. Despite its exotic appearance, caring for it is not too demanding, provided you follow a few basic rules.
💧 Watering Water sparingly – only when the top layer of substrate (approx. 2–3 cm) is dry. Begonia Ferox is a tuberous plant that stores water in its tuber, so it tolerates short-term drought better than overwatering. Caution: Water must not stand in the saucer under the pot. Use soft, room-temperature, standing water and water directly into the substrate, not on the leaves.
☀️ Light Prefers bright indirect light – ideally placed by an east or west-facing window.
Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves and destroy the characteristic spines.
It also tolerates partial shade, but growth will slow down significantly if there is insufficient light.
🌡️ Temperature and air
Ideal temperature: 18–26 °C.
Cold: Does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C or drafts.
Humidity: Requires high air humidity (60–80%). We recommend a humidifier or placing it on a tray with moist pebbles. Do not mist directly on the leaves – water droplets on the leaves can cause rot or spots.
🌿 Fertilization During the growing season (spring–summer), fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer for houseplants at a quarter to half concentration. Completely omit fertilization in winter – the plant may go dormant. Begonias are sensitive to over-fertilization and salt buildup.
🧽 Substrate and repotting Requires a very light, airy, and well-drained substrate – ideally a mix of peat or coir with perlite (approx. 1:1 ratio). Repot carefully and only in spring when the roots fill the pot. Begonia Ferox does not like large pots – always repot only one size up.
⚠️ Warning Begonia Ferox is toxic to pets and children. Ingestion can cause digestive irritation. Keep out of reach of animals and young children.
