Begonia maculata Black Forest Care

Begonia maculata Black Forest is one of the most popular collector begonias. Its dark leaves with distinctive white spots and a reddish-pink underside are a true ornamental gem. This "polka dot begonia" brings elegance and exoticism to any interior.

💧 Watering Water moderately – only when the top layer of the substrate (approx. 2–3 cm) is dry. Begonia maculata does not tolerate overwatering or drying out completely. Caution: Do not let water sit in the saucer under the pot. Use soft, standing water at room temperature and water directly into the substrate – not on the leaves, to prevent spots.

☀️ Light Prefers bright, indirect light – an ideal placement is near an east or west-facing window.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves and bleach the characteristic spots.

  • In insufficient light, the spots become less prominent, and growth slows down.

🌡️ Temperature and Air

  • Ideal temperature: 18–26 °C.

  • Cold: Does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C or drafts.

  • Humidity: Requires higher air humidity (50–70%). We recommend a humidifier or placing it on a tray with moist pebbles. Do not mist directly onto the leaves – water droplets cause spots and rot.

🌿 Fertilization During the growing season (spring–summer), fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer at one-quarter to half strength. Completely avoid fertilization in winter. Begonias are sensitive to over-fertilization and salt buildup – less is more.

🧽 Substrate and Repotting Requires a light, airy, and well-draining substrate – an ideal mix is peat or coco coir with perlite (approx. 1:1 ratio). Repot in spring when the roots fill the pot, always only one size larger. Begonia maculata grows quite fast and will appreciate a support (stake) for its upright stems.

⚠️ Warning Begonia maculata is toxic to pets and children. Ingestion can cause digestive irritation. Keep out of reach of animals and small children.
