Care for Begonia maculata Black Forest

Begonia maculata Black Forest is one of the most popular collector begonias. Its dark leaves with characteristic white spots and a reddish-pink underside are a true ornamental unique. This so-called "Polka Dot Begonia" brings elegance and exoticism to any interior.

Watering Water moderately – only when the top layer of the substrate (approx. 2–3 cm) is dry. Begonia maculata does not tolerate overwatering or complete drying out. Caution: Water must not stand in the saucer under the pot. Use soft, standing water at room temperature and water directly into the substrate – not on the leaves, to prevent spotting.

Light Prefers bright indirect light – an east or west-facing window is ideal.

• Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves and bleach the characteristic spots.

• Lack of light will make the spots less pronounced and slow down growth.

Temperature and Air

• Ideal temperature: 18–26 °C.

• Cold: Does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C or drafts.

• Humidity: Requires high air humidity (50–70 %). We recommend a humidifier or placing it on a tray with moist pebbles. Do not mist directly onto the leaves – water droplets cause spots and rot.

Fertilizing During the growth period (spring–summer), fertilize once every 3–4 weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer for houseplants at a quarter to half concentration. Omit fertilization entirely in winter. Begonias are sensitive to over-fertilization and salt build-up – less is more.

Substrate and Repotting Requires a light, airy, and well-draining substrate – an ideal mix is peat or coco fiber with perlite (approx. 1:1 ratio). Repot in spring when the roots fill the pot, always only one size larger. Begonia maculata grows quite quickly and will appreciate support (a stake) for its upright stems.

Warning Begonia maculata is toxic to pets and children. Ingestion can cause gastrointestinal irritation. Keep out of reach of animals and small children.
