Begonia masoniana Mountain Care

Begonia masoniana, also known as the "Iron Cross Begonia," is an extraordinary houseplant with textured, hairy leaves and a distinctive dark cross-shaped pattern in the center. The Mountain variety features particularly prominent texture and robust growth – it's a true collector's item.

💧 Watering Water moderately – only when the top layer of the substrate (approx. 2–3 cm) is dry. Begonia masoniana is a tuberous plant that stores water in its tuber and tolerates short periods of drought better than overwatering. Caution: Do not let water stand in the saucer under the pot. Always water directly into the substrate – not onto the leaves, as their hairy surface retains moisture and can lead to rot.

☀️ Light Prefers bright indirect light – an east or west-facing window is ideal.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and destroy the characteristic pattern.

  • Lack of light will cause the pattern to fade and growth to slow significantly.

🌡️ Temperature and Air

  • Ideal temperature: 18–26 °C.

  • Cold: Does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C or drafts.

  • Humidity: Requires high air humidity (50–70%). We recommend a humidifier or placing it on a tray with moist pebbles. Do not mist directly onto the leaves – the hairy surface retains water and causes rot.

🌿 Fertilizing During the growing season (spring–summer), fertilize once every 3–4 weeks with a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer at one-quarter to one-half concentration. In winter, stop fertilizing completely – the plant may go into partial dormancy. Begonias are sensitive to over-fertilization and salt buildup.

🧽 Substrate and Repotting Requires a light, airy, and well-draining substrate – an ideal mix is peat or coir with perlite (approx. 1:1 ratio). Repot carefully in spring when the roots fill the pot, always into a pot only one size larger. Begonia masoniana does not like large pots.

⚠️ Warning Begonia masoniana is toxic to pets and children. Ingestion can cause digestive upset. Keep out of reach of animals and small children.
