Care for Begonia Wings Maculata Polka Dot
Begonia Wings Maculata Polka Dot is one of the most popular indoor begonias. Its large winged leaves adorned with white spots ("polka dots") and a red-pink underside are unique. It grows upright and, with proper care, blooms with small pink flowers.
💧 Watering Water moderately – only when the top layer of the substrate (approx. 2–3 cm) is dry. It does not tolerate overwatering or complete drying out. Caution: Water must not stand in the saucer under the pot. Water directly into the substrate – not on the leaves, to avoid spots.
☀️ Light Prefers bright indirect light – ideal placement is near an east or west-facing window.
Avoid direct sun, which can burn the leaves and bleach the spots.
In low light conditions, the spots will be less prominent, and flowering will be limited.
🌡️ Temperature and Air
Ideal temperature: 18–26 °C.
Cold: Does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C or drafts.
Humidity: Prefers higher air humidity (50–70%). We recommend a humidifier or a tray with moist pebbles. Do not mist directly on the leaves.
🌿 Fertilization During the growing season (spring–summer), fertilize once every 3–4 weeks with diluted liquid fertilizer at a quarter to half strength. Completely omit fertilization in winter. Begonias are sensitive to over-fertilization.
🧽 Substrate and Repotting Requires a light, airy, and well-draining substrate – a mixture of peat or coir with perlite (1:1). Repot in spring, always only one size larger. It will appreciate a support for its upright stems.
⚠️ Warning Begonia maculata is toxic to pets and children. Keep it out of their reach.
