Caring for Begonia Rex Maui Sunset
Begonia Rex Maui Sunset is a charming Rex begonia with leaves in warm shades of pink, orange, and silver – like a sunset over Maui. Rex Begonias are primarily grown for their distinctive leaves and are among the most decorative houseplants ever.
💧 Watering Water moderately – only when the top layer of the substrate (approx. 2–3 cm) is dry. Begonia Rex is tuberous and does not tolerate overwatering. Caution: Water must not stand in the saucer under the pot. Water directly into the substrate – not onto the leaves, as their hairy surface retains moisture and can lead to rot.
☀️ Light Prefers bright, indirect light – ideal placement is near an east or west-facing window.
Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves and destroy their coloration.
Lack of light causes colors to fade and growth to slow.
🌡️ Temperature and Air
Ideal temperature: 18–24 °C.
Cold: Does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C or drafts.
Humidity: Prefers higher air humidity (50–70%). We recommend a humidifier or a tray with moist pebbles. Do not mist directly onto the leaves – droplets cause spots and rot.
🌿 Fertilizing During the growing season (spring–summer), fertilize once every 3–4 weeks with diluted liquid fertilizer at one-quarter to half concentration. Completely omit fertilization in winter – the plant may go dormant. Rex Begonias are sensitive to over-fertilization.
🧽 Substrate and Repotting Requires a light, airy, and well-drained substrate – a mixture of peat or coconut fiber with perlite (1:1). Repot carefully in spring, always into a pot only one size larger. Begonia Rex does not like large pots.
⚠️ Warning Begonia Rex is toxic to pets and children. Keep out of their reach.
