Care for Philodendron Melinonii 'Gold'

Philodendron Melinonii 'Gold' is a relatively low-maintenance houseplant that forgives minor growing mistakes. With its vibrant neon leaves and robust growth, it's an ideal "high-impact" addition to any interior that doesn't require as much effort as more sensitive species.

💧 Watering Water Melinonii when the soil in the top 1/2 to 2/3 of the pot is dry. It has fleshy stems that retain water well, so it tolerates short periods of drought better than overwatering. Caution: Because this species has very stiff and firm leaves, wilting due to lack of water may not be noticeable in time. Therefore, rely primarily on checking the substrate (with a finger or skewer). Use room-temperature, dechlorinated water; chlorinated and icy water can shock the roots.

☀️ Light It thrives best in bright indirect light (aka filtered light). This is crucial for maintaining its iconic neon yellow/gold color.

  • It can also be grown in medium indirect light, but the leaf color will change to a darker green and growth will slow down.

  • Avoid direct midday sun, which could scorch the sensitive light-colored leaves. An ideal placement is near an east or west-facing window behind a sheer curtain.

🌡️ Temperature and Air

  • Ideal temperature: 18–27 °C.

  • Cold: Does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C and drafts.

  • Humidity: Average room humidity (around 50%) is sufficient. Higher humidity (above 60%) will certainly benefit it, but in drier air, its edges will not brown as easily. Misting is not necessary; simply wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust.

🌿 Fertilization During the growing season (spring–autumn), fertilize once a month with a liquid fertilizer for ornamental plants at half concentration. Completely omit fertilization in winter unless the plant is actively growing under grow lights. Philodendrons are sensitive to salt buildup in the substrate, so less is more in this case.

🧽 Substrate Requires an extremely airy and well-draining substrate. An aroid mix (a mixture of coco coir/peat, pine bark, perlite, and coco chips) is ideal. The roots must have access to oxygen, and water must drain quickly through the pot to prevent rot.

⚠️ Warning The plant is toxic to pets and children. It contains calcium oxalate crystals, which, if ingested, cause irritation of mucous membranes, swelling, and burning in the mouth.
