Philodendron Selloum 'Hope' Care Guide
Philodendron Selloum 'Hope' is a robust, non-climbing cultivar that brings a true jungle atmosphere to any home. It is loved for its giant, deeply lobed leaves with wavy edges. It grows more like a sprawling shrub and eventually develops a thick central stem that looks like a small trunk.
💧 Watering
'Hope' drinks a bit more than common climbing philodendrons, but it still dislikes "wet feet."
When to water: Allow the substrate to dry out approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of the pot's depth.
Beware of extremes: Too much dryness will cause the edges to brown, while overwatering leads to yellowing lower leaves and root rot.
Water: Use room-temperature, standing water.
☀️ Light
This species requires a bit more light than its climbing relatives to maintain a compact shape.
Placement: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates some morning or late afternoon sun well.
Lack of light: Leaves will have very long petioles, stretching towards the light, and may start to break under their own weight.Rotation: Rotate the plant regularly so it grows evenly and doesn't lean to one side.
🌡️ Temperature and Air
Ideal temperature: 18–28 °C. It's a tropical plant, so beware of drafts and frost from windows in winter.
Humidity: 'Hope' is very resilient in this regard. It can handle average room humidity around 40–50%, but if you give it more, it will reward you with larger and more vibrant leaves.
Cleanliness: Large leaves act as dust traps. Wipe them with a damp cloth or shower the plant with lukewarm water occasionally.
🌿 Fertilization and Growth
Fertilization: Since it produces a lot of green mass, it needs energy. Fertilize every 14 days from spring to autumn with a liquid fertilizer for green plants.
Space: Remember that 'Hope' does not grow vertically on a pole but spreads outwards. It needs ample space around it for its leaves to stand out.
🧽 Substrate
It needs a mix that retains moisture but also drains excess water quickly:
Composition: A mix of quality potting mix for houseplants, perlite, and pieces of pine bark.
Drainage: A layer of expanded clay aggregate at the bottom of the pot is essential to prevent roots from sitting in water.
