  • Botanical name: Howea forsteriana (F.Muell.) Becc.
  • Family: Arecaceae – palm family
  • Type: live evergreen indoor palm
  • Native range: Lord Howe Island, Australia
  • Care level: easy-care with suitable light and consistent watering

Watering

Water when the top few centimetres of the potting mix have dried out. Then water the root ball evenly and allow any excess water to drain away. The palm should not sit in water or be allowed to dry out completely for long periods. In winter, adjust watering to the slower growth and room temperature.

Light

It does best in a bright spot with indirect light. It tolerates partial shade and lower light levels than many other palms, but does not thrive in a dark corner for extended periods. Protect it from harsh direct sunlight.

Temperature and humidity

It prefers a typical indoor temperature of around 16–27 °C, without sudden fluctuations or cold drafts. It adapts to average indoor humidity; increasing humidity can help in a dry, heated interior. Do not place it right next to a radiator. Gently wipe dust from the leaves with a damp cloth.

Fertilizing

During active growth, feed about once a month with fertilizer for palms or houseplants, following the manufacturer's instructions. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth slows.

Potting mix and repotting

Use a well-draining potting mix for palms or houseplants that retains a moderate amount of moisture without becoming compacted. The pot must have drainage holes. Repot only when the roots have filled the container, preferably in spring, into a pot that is only slightly larger. Handle the root ball gently.

Practical tips

Do not cut off the palm's growing tip. Remove only dead or badly damaged old leaves. Brown leaf tips may be related to dry air, irregular watering, or salt buildup, so review the overall care routine. Check the undersides of the leaves regularly for spider mites and scale insects.

The ASPCA lists Howea forsteriana as non-toxic to cats and dogs. This classification does not mean the plant is intended for consumption.

What you will receive
