Care for Monstera deliciosa 'Thai Constellation'
Keeping 'Thai Constellation' in perfect condition is easier than with many other rare aroids, but its stunning panoramic leaves with creamy variegation require a specific approach to maintain their beauty.
Watering
- When to water: Water only when the substrate is approximately 1/2 to 2/3 dry. Unlike a common monstera, 'Thai' is more susceptible to root rot (due to its laboratory origin in tissue cultures).
- Warning signs: If the leaves noticeably droop their long petioles, it's time to water. Conversely, brown, "soggy" spots on the creamy parts indicate overwatering.
- Water quality: Use standing or rainwater at room temperature. Water that is too cold from the tap can cause shock and browning of the light variegated areas.
Light
- Ideal conditions: Requires bright indirect light (filtered). Sufficient light is crucial for maintaining the contrasting creamy color and promoting the formation of fenestrations (holes in the leaves).
- Lack of light: The plant will grow very slowly, stems will be "leggy" and stretched, and leaves may remain small and without holes.
- Beware of sunburn: Direct midday sun can irreversibly burn the sensitive achlorophyllous (creamy) parts of the leaves. An east-facing window or further away from a south-facing one is ideal.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: Standard room temperature of 18–27 °C is ideal. It does not tolerate drafts and temperatures below 15 °C.
- Air humidity: Aim for 60% or more. If the humidity in the apartment drops below 40%, the tips and edges of the leaves will start to brown and dry out.
- Humidity tips: It thrives best near a humidifier or on a saucer with moist LECA. Misting the leaves is not highly recommended for this monstera, as standing water on the leaves can encourage mold growth in variegated areas.
Fertilizing
- Season: From spring to autumn, fertilize once every 14–21 days.
- Concentration: Use a quality fertilizer for aroids or ornamental plants, but at half concentration. This monstera grows slower, and an excess of salts in the substrate could damage its more sensitive root system.
Substrate
- Composition: Requires a so-called "Aroid mix". It must be extremely airy and well-draining so that the roots can breathe.
- Recommended recipe: A mixture of quality substrate, pine bark, perlite, coconut chips, and a little charcoal (acts as a rot preventative).
