Care for Sansevieria Hahnii 'Spiral Star'

Sansevieria 'Spiral Star' is an extremely resilient and compact houseplant, ideal for beginners or spaces where other plants struggle. It is valued for its stiff, dark green leaves with silvery marbling, forming a low, star-shaped rosette. It's a "low-maintenance" champion that cleans the air and requires almost no attention.

💧 Watering

For sansevierias, the golden rule applies: Less is more.

When to water: Let the soil completely dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to a minimum (once a month or less).

Beware of the center: Never pour water directly into the center of the leaf rosette, as it could rot. Water only the substrate around the plant.

Water: It tolerates virtually any water, but standing water at room temperature is always a safe bet.

☀️ Light

'Spiral Star' is incredibly adaptable when it comes to light conditions.

Placement: It will thrive best in bright indirect light, where it will grow fastest and maintain its contrasting pattern.

Shade: As one of the few plants, it can also handle partial shade or darker corners, but it will grow very slowly there.

Direct sun: It can tolerate morning or afternoon sun, but harsh summer midday sun could "bleach" or burn the leaves.

🌡️ Temperature and air

Ideal temperature: 18–27 °C. Room temperature is ideal all year round.

Cold: It is sensitive to frost and temperatures below 10 °C. Be careful with winter ventilation near the window where the plant is located.

Humidity: Sansevierias love dry air. Misting is absolutely unnecessary and rather harmful for them. It is sufficient to occasionally wipe dust from the leaves so they can breathe.

🌿 Fertilization and growth

Fertilization: During the growing season (spring–autumn), fertilize once a month with fertilizer for cacti and succulents, at half concentration. Do not fertilize at all in winter.

Growth: 'Spiral Star' grows very slowly and remains low. Over time, it forms "babies" (offsets) around itself, which nicely thicken the rosette. It does not need any support.

🧽 Substrate

The key is perfect water drainage, as sansevierias most often die from root rot in wet soil:

Composition: An ideal substrate is for cacti and succulents or a mixture of common substrate with a large proportion of sand and perlite.

Drainage: The pot must have drainage holes, and a layer of expanded clay should be placed at the bottom.
