Sansevieria trifasciata 'Megan' Care
Sansevieria 'Megan' is an exceptionally resilient and rewarding plant that brings a modern and clean look to any interior. It is prized for its broad, sword-like leaves with a unique steel-grey hue. It grows upright and very compactly, making it a perfect addition to desks or narrow shelves. As a bonus, it is one of the best air purifiers in the plant kingdom.
💧 Watering
With Sansevierias, the rule is: strength lies in dryness. They are succulent plants that store water in their leaves.
When to water: Let the entire pot's substrate completely dry out before watering again. In winter, watering once every 4–6 weeks is sufficient.
Beware of the center: Never pour water into the center of the leaf rosette. This could cause rot, which would quickly kill the plant. Water only the edges of the pot.
Water: Room temperature, standing water is ideal. Sansevierias are sensitive to overwatering, not water quality.
☀️ Light
While 'Megan' is a "tough plant" that can survive a lot, light determines its beauty.
Placement: It will do best in bright, indirect light. Here, the leaves will be the widest and the color the most vibrant.
Shade: It also tolerates shady spots deep in a room very well. However, be aware that it will hardly grow in complete shade.
Direct sun: It can tolerate morning sun, but sharp summer scorch could leave unsightly brown spots on its light leaves.
🌡️ Temperature and Air
Ideal temperature: 18–27 °C. It is a heat-loving plant that does not tolerate frost.
Cold: The temperature should never drop below 12 °C. Watch out for drafts during winter ventilation.
Humidity: Unlike philodendrons, it prefers dry air. Misting is counterproductive for this plant. It is perfectly sufficient to occasionally wipe dust off the leaves with a damp cloth so that the plant can undisturbed purify the air in your home.
🌿 Fertilization and Growth Support
Fertilization: During the growing season (spring–autumn), fertilize once a month with a weak solution of cactus and succulent fertilizer. Do not fertilize at all in winter.
Stability: It grows upright and does not need any support. Over time, new shoots (offsets) will start to appear in the pot, which will beautifully thicken the plant.
🧽 Substrate
Perfect drainage is essential. The roots must not remain wet, otherwise they will immediately begin to rot.
Composition: Use substrate for cacti and succulents or a mixture of common substrate with a large proportion of sand, perlite, or expanded clay.
Pot: We recommend heavier ceramic or terracotta pots, which are porous and help wick away moisture.
