Strelitzia nicolai Care Guide
Strelitzia nicolai, also known as Bird of Paradise or White Banana, is a majestic tropical plant with large, leathery leaves on long stems. This specimen is planted in vulcaponic substrate with a built-in water level indicator – making care intuitive and easy even for beginners. In large interiors, it acts as a living sculpture and can bring the entire space to perfection.
Vulcaponic substrate and water level indicator
The plant is potted in vulcaponic substrate – a direct medium made of volcanic porous material that ensures excellent root aeration and natural capillary water supply. The built-in water level indicator shows the current water level in the reservoir – just look and you know when to water. No guessing, no overwatering.
Watering
Monitor the water level indicator – refill water only when the level drops to the minimum. Let the reservoir dry out for a few days before the next watering so that the roots can breathe. Use room temperature water, preferably settled water.
Light
It needs bright direct or indirect sunlight. Placement near a large south- or west-facing window is ideal. In insufficient light, the leaves will lose firmness and the plant will grow poorly.
Temperature and Airiness
Ideal temperature: 18–28 °C. It can tolerate short-term cooling to 10 °C but does not like drafts. Air humidity is not crucial; normal room humidity suits it.
Fertilizing
During spring and summer, fertilize every 14 days with liquid fertilizer for flowering or green plants – add it directly to the reservoir when refilling water. In winter, fertilize once a month or not at all.
