Tillandsia ionantha Care

Tillandsia ionantha is one of the most rewarding "air plants". While it is undemanding, it has its specific needs – forget about pots and soil, this plant wants freedom.

💧 Watering and Soaking

Since it doesn't have roots to drink from, it absorbs water through scales on its leaves (trichomes).

Misting: Spray it thoroughly with a mister 2-3 times a week. More often in a dry apartment.

Soaking: Once every 1-2 weeks, submerge the entire plant in a bowl of water for 30-60 minutes.

Important: After soaking, let it dry upside down so that water doesn't remain in the heart (center) of the plant, otherwise it will rot.

Use room temperature, standing, rainwater, or filtered water.

☀️ Light

In nature, they grow on trees, where they are protected by leaves, so direct scorching sun is not good for them.

Bright indirect light: Ideal for rich colors and flowering.

If there is insufficient light, the plant will be pale and won't want to color red/pink.

The best placement is by an east-facing window or a little further from a south-facing window.

🌡️ Temperature and Air

Like any tropical plant, it loves stability.

Ideal temperature: 15–30 °C.

Ventilation: It's an "air" plant, so it loves air circulation. Don't put it in completely closed containers without openings.

It does not tolerate frost or drafts during the winter months.

🌿 Fertilization

It doesn't need it to survive, but with fertilizer, it will grow faster and have more vibrant flowers.

Use special fertilizer for bromeliads or tillandsias (in a spray).

Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring-summer) by adding the fertilizer to the water in the mister. Always use a very weak concentration.

🧽 Substrate (Or its absence)

Here comes the biggest change:

No substrate! Tillandsia will rot in soil.

You can attach it to a piece of bark, place it in a glass terrarium, a seashell, or just place it on a shelf. The roots that may appear serve only as an "anchor" to attach to the surface, not to absorb nutrients.
